Line Patterns

Objectives
  • Create geometric line patterns
  • Construct "curved" lines from straight lines
  • Create art using lines, colors, and patterns

Lesson Description

Students will use the Google Earth path tool to connect markings in a geometric pattern of their design.  Beyond aesthetics, certain geometric principles of lines, line segments, and angles can be explored.  The students can be asked to describe how curves are made using straight lines.  Some design concepts are reminiscent of early video game graphics.

This activity is good for training students how to create paths, select colors, and save or send files with Google Earth.  Three templates are provided in the Kmz download, but teachers or students could create additional templates for different results.
